Why do many younger people not look at Insurance as a progressive career pathway? I believe it is because many simply do not understand the industry. In some cases, the industry has found it difficult to shake the reputation of being too conventional, or even dull. These preconceived attitudes and misconceptions need to be addressed and disproved. Â As the current insurance workforce ages, the skill gap widens, so bringing younger talented people into the industry is a must.
Younger people can bring smart technical skills: They have grown up using digital tools so can adapt to modern technology quickly. The insurance industry is embracing digital transformation so it will need to attract technologically-minded people with the right skills to help drive this change.
Younger people can bring fresh perspectives and new ideas: They question old processes and naturally find faster ways to work. They communicate differently with their peer groups. Their perspectives on products and marketing can make Insurance more appealing by shifting the narrative and by using relatable communication and modern platforms.
Younger people prioritise meaningful work: Meaningful, purposeful work that makes an impact matter to Millennials and Gen Z. Meaningful work can mean actively helping people or making a societal difference. It can be as simple as knowing that the company they work for provides a product or a service that people want and need.
Younger people dig deep to evaluate a company. Work is a reflection of who they are. They look for a company whose goals and values align with their own personal values. They look past polished corporate messaging and dig deep to find the unfiltered reality of a workplace. They want to see clear pathways rather than vague promises of growth opportunities.
Millennials and Gen Z are the most diverse generations in history and they expect to see that diversity reflected in their workplace. For them, work isn’t just about making money—it’s about making an impact. Millennial and Gen Z are the generation that will shape the future of the industry and drive it forward. It is time to open Millennials and Gen Z minds to Insurance and reap the benefits.
